Tutorial: Wooden deck bases

Before and after shot. (Small piece to show thickness of the foam.)

Step 1: Get a craft foam sheet at your local hobby store. (I’ve cut mine down so it’s easier to work with)


Step 2: Use a steel wire brush (or clean BBQ grill scraper) to create a wood grain effect by scrapping the craft foam. This takes more scrapes than you think. Go crazy!

Step 3: Slice the foam into desired board-sized pieces.


Step 4: Glue the boards to the base you are using. This is like a puzzle, so take your time. Dry fit before you glue each piece.

Step 5: Use a toothpick to create nail holes. Cut the edges of the boards that hang off the edge jaggedly.


And done! Time to paint!
