Google Search loves to offer suggestions when you start to type something in the search bar. The question asked in the title of this blog entry, or it’s juxtaposition, “Is Space Marine Warhammer 40000?”, is a question that is frequently suggested to me by Google. Being a crusty old wargamer, who has been immersed in the Games Workshop world of Warhammer 40000 (or Warhammer 40k to the cool kids who love abbreviation) since 1993, I’ve always thought this was a silly question. Recently, I have decided that I should put myself in the shoes of someone who is new to the game, and is really confused about this sort of question. To someone new to this world, this is a very perplexing question. To an old war dog like me, the answer is, Yes, No, and Sorta. Before your head explodes, give me a second to explain.

Is Space Marine Warhammer 40000?

Yes, if you are talking about the Relic Entertainment and THQ produced button-mashing video game. Space Marine, the video game, is set in the Warhammer 40000 universe.

This fun, noisy, and quite gory hack-and-slasher pits you, an Ultramarines Chapter Space Marine against the noisy, brutish Orks, and later, the forces of the evil Chaos Space Marines (or Heretic Astartes, if you prefer).  The Ork voice acting is a bit annoying (you can only hear a cockney “Space Marine” a few hundred times before it gets old), but if you like the “Devil May Cry” type 3rd person button masher, you may enjoy this game.

Is Warhammer 40000 Space Marine?

No, if you’re referring to the old 6mm scale Epic Space Marine tabletop wargame, also from Games Workshop. These two games take place in the same universe, but at a much different scale.

A Warhammer 40000 scale Space Marine (larger) compared to an epic scale Space Marine Terminator.

The Epic Space Marine game (now defunct, but more recently re-imagined as Adeptus Titanicus, which is set during the Horus Heresy, also affectionately referred to as Warhammer 30000) was designed to show battles in the Warhammer 40000 universe on a much grander scale. Battles featuring super heavy tanks, fliers, and multiple titans (humongous battle constructs, some, like the Imperator class, referred to as “City sized”) are commonplace in the Epic Space Marine universe, whereas in Warhammer 40000, these models are monstrous and take up a large portion of the table.

There are also significant rules differences between the two games, in the interest of making the larger game move faster and not get so mired down in the details. To add to the confusion, most versions of Warhammer 40000 also have rules called Apocalypse which are made to feature the larger scale models and also make the rules more streamlined.

Are Space Marines Warhammer 40000?

Sorta. The Space Marines, or Adeptes Astartes, are the most popular and well-supported army in Warhammer 40000.  So it is like asking the question are the Dallas Cowboys the same as American Football. The Dallas Cowboys play American Football, but they aren’t American Football, despite what Jerry Jones and his fans may think.

I hope this entry answers the questions you may have regarding whether or not the Space Marines are Warhammer 40000, or vice versa. As always, if you have any questions on this or anything else, feel free to comment below, or reach us via social media.
